About Suzanne
I have been an academic, educator and television producer. Currently, I am teaching and writing on politics while working on CivicSources.com. Our general lack of civic knowledge motivated me to create CivicSources.com - not to mention the absolutely crazy and divided state of political and social discourse in the country today. My background in both education and politics leads me to believe that the more we know about our national and local government, the better citizens we will be. For this reason, I am excited about the possibilities of CivicSources.com.
The value of collaboration and cooperation across all sectors of society and truthful media is needed now more than at any other time. Disseminating reliable information about our community and helping others to achieve their goals are my main objectives with CivicSources.com.
At Marymount College, where I taught in the Politics Department for a number of years; I tried to nurture in my students’ good citizenship values and a passion for civic participation and social responsibility. Teaching in an “all women’s environment” was an invaluable experience and I had the opportunity to encourage my students to actively engage in preparing their own futures.
I then migrated to television, first working as a production assistant and then segment producer for Saturday Night Live (Weekend Update) where I spent over twenty years. While at the Network, I developed hands-on live television production skills and learned the value of collaboration under pressure (and of course learned how to put together hilariously funny news segments.) I went on to develop my own television, film, and CD projects, some of which are currently in development.
I look for opportunities to combine my interests in media, education, politics, and the arts. Toward that end, I have been a consultant to numerous non-profit educational and international organizations including the American Sustainable Business Council; Vermont Law School; The People’s Movement for Human Rights Learning, and a leading national defense department contractor where I served as liaison to the ombudsmen.
During the 2008 presidential campaign; as a contributor to Editor and Publisher Magazine; I put out a column called Trail Mix, which ran as a daily editorial feature on the campaign’s press coverage. Trail Mix was nominated for a Jesse H. Neal Award for its media coverage of the campaign. At this time, I also created an early online blog entitled, A Voice of Our Own which was an outlet for women to share their everyday life, work experiences, and reflections.
More recently, I have been teaching history at Bergen Community College and politics in the New Jersey Department of Corrections “Step” Program, at both East Jersey State Prison, (formerly Rahway State Prison) and Northern State Prison in Newark, New Jersey. I am also writing on politics and other areas. Much of my writing is collected online on Medium.
I am a displaced Californian and graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of California, Berkeley and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. I received a Master’s Degree and M.Phil. in Political Science from Columbia University with a Certificate in Middle Eastern Studies. I also received a Masters in International Affairs from the School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA), also at Columbia University.
Finally, I am a member of numerous local performing arts boards and international charitable organizations including an emerging affiliate of the Human Rights Committee of the United Nations. I have two daughters and a foster child and reside in Northern New Jersey.
